History of Faculty

The Faculty of Economic and Social Studies started in the late thirties as the Department of Accounting in the Higher Schools of Gordon Memorial College. At the beginning of the fifties the subjects of Economic, Social and Political Sciences were taught as part of the curriculum of the Faculty of Arts. In 1958 an independent Faculty of Economic and Social Studies was inaugurated, consisting of the Departments of Economics, Social Science, Political Science and Business Administration. 

Mission

The students of the Faculty were allowed to study some of the courses in the Faculty of Arts. Later the Department of Business Administration was established as an independent school. Some new departments such as those of Econometrics and Social Statistics were added to the Faculty as well as a center for development studies and research and a center for health economics.

Public Services Offered by the Faculty

  • The staff members of the Faculty provide organizations and individuals, in the public and private sectors, with feasibility studies and advisory services. In addition to teaching and conducting academic research.
  • The Faculty organizes conferences and discussion groups for economic, political and social studies.
  • The Faculty arranges academic tours for students and economic organizations inside the Sudan and abroad.
  • The Faculty also organizes computer training courses, and provides short courses in the fields of Economic Development Planning, Gender Studies, Statistics, Econometrics and Development.

Research Activities

The Faculty of Economic and Social Studies takes special interest in field research, particularly in the areas related to economic and social development in the country. This manifests itself in the activities of the Development Studies and Research Centre, which was affiliated with the Faculty, in addition to studies accomplished by the departments. The staff members undertake expert consultancy services for both public and private sectors in various projects. The departmental libraries abound with university theses and dissertations submitted by higher degree students of the Faculty.
